The trouble began just before 1pm when two tractor trailers collided north of the Lansdale interchange. One truck was carrying lumber and both vehicles caught fire, causing the turnpike to be closed and northbound traffic routed off of the turnpike at the Lansdale interchange, causing tie-ups on secondary routes. Shortly after shortly after 1pm a two-vehicle accident occurred in the northbound lanes two miles south of the first crash. Then around 3pm two subsequent accidents occurred. Only two people had to be flown to hospitals as a result of those accidents and all lanes were open by rush hour.
