House Financial Services Committee Chair Barney Frank has endorsed Congressman Joe Sestak in his Democratic primary campaign for the U.S. Senate seat now held by Arlen Specter.
Frank says he does not believe specter did the political profession any good by changing his registration from Republican to Democrat earlier this year.
“This is important for the integrity of the political system. Senator Specter has a very distinguished political career, but he made it very clear that he left the party he had been in for a very long time solely because he didn’t think he could get re-elected as a member of that party, and he changed parties and he changed his views on some very important issues.”
Frank says he respects President Obama and Governor Rendell’s support for Specter, because the party needs converts, but he believes they made a mistake. Sestak says he believes Frank is in politics and government for the good of the nation.
“I respect his principles. They’re Democratic principles, but the principles that stand for truly doing what this country needs done for it, and in a way that’s honest, accountable and transparent.”
Sestak, who represents parts of Montgomery and Delaware Counties, says he understands political calculation, but he believes the voters are tired of back-room deals.
