Hatboro-Horsham Education Association President Jackie Anderson spoke at Monday night’s school board meeting, telling board members and a crowd of teachers and parents the board’s proposed merit pay system would be unfair to teachers and would not improve student performance. She suggested it might cause teachers to discourage students from taking advanced placement tests because they could get lower scores or hand out A’s to get more money. She said education and experience are the big factors in improving student performance. Board President Mark Opalisky said the board still wants to work with the teachers on a merit pay system. Hatboro-Horsham teachers have been working without a contract since June, when their old one expired. No new negotiations have been scheduled.
