The public is invited to the annual flower show at the Peter Becker Community in Harleysville. It opened Thursday with a theme of Flowers, Fairy Tales and Fantasies. Residents Joe and Lois Pullen were there portraying Jack and Jill, and Jack was a slightly reluctant volunteer.
“Well, it’s a dirty job but somebody’s got to do it. Ha, ha. A lot of people said they didn’t want to do what I’m doing, but I’m trying to be a good sport.”
Jill says she volunteered because it looked like fun.
“I’m wearing an apron and I’m wearing a blonde wig because blondes have more fun, and I’m having a lot of fun today, ha, ha, and I have a lot of hair, ha, ha.”
Pullen says she also painted dolls and other decorative items for the show. Peter Becker President and CEO Carol Berster has a role playing the old woman who lived in a shoe.
“For the show I have 20 children that were all made by our residents out of recycled materials. They started with balloons, paper mache, cereal boxes, coffee cans, used water bottles. We got socks from the thrift shop. All the clothing on the kids is recycled as well. Everything is built by the guys in the wood shop. They built the shoe, they built Rapunzel’s tower.”
Berster says it comes right after the big Philadelphia Flower Show, but bigger is not always better, and they think their show is a lot more fun. Craft and antique shows and plant and quilt sales are part of the fun, and refreshments are available. It continues from 9-AM TO 7-PM Friday and 9-AM TO 4-PM Saturday at the Peter Becker Community, Maple Avenue and Yoder Road in Harleysville.
