Valley Forge National Historical Park observed French Alliance Day over the weekend. Continental Army re-enactors marched in formation in the Muhlenberg Hut area. Park Ranger Peter Maugle says the French supported the Patriot cause from the start, but the alliance 232 years ago took the Revolutionary War to a new level.
“The alliance immediately had an effect. Shortly after the alliance was announced the British evacuated Philadelphia. They sent thousands of their soldiers to the Indies and to Florida because they were worried about the French arriving.”
He says Continental Army soldiers and French officers joined together and celebrated with a hail of gunfire.
