Delaware Valley College Environmental Design Professor Mike Fleischacker says the school has been teaching in his subject area for about 20 years, but it’s been growing and diversifying in recent years to teach more ecological restoration or reclamation. He says it’s based on studying natural systems.
“It’s understanding all of the different systems that influence any given topic and applying them in a way that’s healthy.”
He says the next step is identifying problems.
“Many of our woodlands and forests are being choked out by invasive species and things like that. Understanding them and being able to go into them and restoring them to a state where regeneration can happen is what we can do.”
Fleischacker says students can’t really design regeneration, but they can do such things as removing invasive plants to help nature regenerate itself. He appeared Thursday on the Transportation Edition of the WNPV talk program Comment Please by Univest.
