Montgomery County State Representative Mike Vereb wants the U.S. Attorney to review perks at the Delaware River Port Authority and see if any crimnal activity took place. He says people on both sides of the river pay higher bridge tolls for free EZ Passes some authority employees get, as well as questionable investments.
“The investments in the Lincoln Financial Field, the investments in the soccer stadium have nothing to do with these bridges and these tolls, and I think people are tired of putting that dollar in the bucket and it’s not staying in the bucket, and it affects all of us.”
He says people are tired of the lies and abuses, and he believes at the very least the authority misspent public money.
“I think that three words explain this, and they came up in the (former State Senator Vince) Fumo trial, Other People’s Money, and they’re not accountable to it. It’s not their money, and the fact that people pay another dollar to cross that bridge because they have to cross that bridge and it’s not a tax increase, I think that they see this money as more flexible to spend.”
If the DRPA has money to spend, Vereb says, why not spend it on libraries or environmental protection? He says tax dollars from both Pennsylvania and New Jersey go into the port authority. For example, authority employees benefit from the Pennsylvania State Employees Pension Plan. He appeared Wednesday on the WNPV talk program Comment Please by Univest.
