7th District Congressman Pat Meehan resigned from Congress Friday. The federal lawmaker’s resignation likely did not come as a shock in the political community.
In January, it was revealed that Meehan settled a sexual harassment lawsuit with a member of his staff for 39,000. The resulting fallout was visible outside Meehan’s Springfield, Delaware County office when constituents protested his use of public funds to settle the lawsuit. Meehan says he will repay the U.S. Treasury the 39 grand over the next 30 days. Meehan, in an interview after the payment come to light, said he felt as if he and the staff member were soul mates. Meehan, prior to the resignation on Friday, was not seeking reelection in November. Governor Wolf will oversee a special election to be held for the remainder of the 7th District Congressional seat.
