Montco Dedicates Last Part Of Perk Trail

creekThe Perkiomen Trail is now complete. The Montgomery County Commissioners dedicated the final stretch this week at Green Lane Park.  The 1.7-mile paved section cost $3 million, with the federal government paying the bill.  Vice Chairman Joe Hoeffel, speaking at the ceremony, said it’s an investment in the quality of life.

“There’s a lot of investment, and not just federal money, but county money, and more than that of time and sweat equity and a belief that this community is worth investing in, and that a trail network is something that adds great value to Montgomery County.”

The county paid for planning and engineering and design work.  The new trail section has a steep slope about 800 feet long and a tunnel under the road at the main park entrance on Route 29.  Regional County Trail Manager Rich Wood said it completes a loop around the Green Lane Reservoir, and connects with several other unpaved trails within the park that are more rugged than the loop.

“We don’t want all of our trails to be asphalt trails.  We want to have hiking trails and what they call single-track trails where I can enjoy just a hike through the woods or maybe two of us on horseback riding up through the woods where we’re not going to run into, maybe, bunches and bunches of bicycles.  There’s a place for everybody, and we have a need for those kinds of trails in our park as well.”

He said he spoke about two weeks ago with a family that used the trail to get from a parking lot to a Green Lane Nature Center program.

“They rode their bikes, made it up the hill, went to their nature center program, had some water and rode back down again, and they said it was great because they didn’t have to drive to where they were going to.”

Wood said they want people to park their cars and use the trail for hiking, biking and horseback riding and, weather permitting, cross-country skiing.
