Fire Co Celebrates Centennial

paradeThe Hatfield Volunteer Fire Company celebrated its 100th anniversary on Saturday. Participants included unofficial company historian Herman Goetter, who put together a photo history from the beginning to the present day.  He says he started working on it about five years ago.

“We realized that our 100th anniversary was coming up, so I started collecting historical information, and I got more interested in the photos than the written history, so I started developing this photo history book.”

He says Fire Company funding has changed since he joined up 44 years ago.

“They only started with the money they could beg and borrow from the members of the community and businesses, and we’ve only gotten into tax money in the last 25 years.  Before that it was all fundraising.  We still do a lot of fundraising.  We have to sell flowers, and the Ladies’ Auxiliary serves dinners, and we do everything we can to raise money and keep the fire department going for the community.”

Goetter says his book is selling pretty well, and if you want a copy you can contact him at Hatfieldfire.com.  It’s available in both color and black and white, and all proceeds benefit the Hatfield Volunteer Fire Company.
