Farm Market Opens

flowersA huge crowd turned out Saturday for opening day of the Lansdale Farmers’ Market’s second season on Railroad Avenue. Vendors included Bill Weller, owner of Orchard Hill Farms in Bloomsburg.  He was selling fruit from about an acre of cherry trees he has in Columbia County, and he loves the farmers’ market.

“We feel that selling direct to the customer is the way of the future for us.  We prefer selling directly to the consumer rather than wholesaling to somebody else.  It’s more profitable, that’s the bottom line for us, but we also take a lot of pride in what we do at our farm and try to grow top-quality fruit with great flavor, so it’s nice to interact with your customers and get to know who you’re trying to supply.”

Weller says he should have blueberries along with the cherries this coming Saturday, followed by peaches, plums and nectarines later in the summer, and apples in the fall.  Vendor Thaddeus Jett of Jett’s Produce in Tylersport was there with broccoli, zucchini, lettuce and potatoes.  He says he starts them early inside tunnels.

“I have a 30-by-100-foot tunnel and I also have a 20-by-100-foot tunnel where I start my stuff in March.  All my lettuce and stuff I can grow earlier in the season.  I can cheat a little bit.”

He says he could not have asked for a better day.

“It’s an excellent day  I’m glad these people came out here to support this farm market like they’re doing.”

Jett says he had too much rain last year, but this year is off to a great start.  Lansdale Farmers Market hours are 9:00am to 1:00pm every Saturday through October.
