A Good Night For Lansdale Car Show

car_2Saturday night’s weather was perfect for the 20th Annual Under the Lights Car Show, sponsored by the Fairmount Volunteer Fire Company. Exhibitors included John Emmell of New Britain, who was there with his replica of a 1923 Ford T Bucket.  He says it’s a pickup truck with a cut-down bed.

“I’m 60 plus, and this is our generation.  This is what grandpop’s old pickup truck looked like, only we made a hot rod out of it, and I just like old cars.  It makes a lot of noise, and I like making noise.  Buy that and put a “Street Rod” tag on it, you can make all the noise you want and nobody cares.  Step on the throttle on that and you’re gone, and that’s another aspect.  The force, the power, it’s there, it’s under my foot.”

Emmell says you can buy a brand new replica of an old car, and that’s what he did, but he also has a genuine 1957 Thunderbird, and any parts he buys for it are strictly original.  Harry Mills of Telford was also there, along with his 1957 Oldsmobile Super 88 convertible.  He says the Olds was a very rugged car.

“You really can’t wear ‘em out.  They had a lot of nickel in the block, and they could take a lot more abuse than a lot of other cars, and they were very fast for their time, and they still are pretty fast if they’re worked over a little bit, and they’re very durable.  I just love Oldsmobiles.”

Mills says he felt like his legs had been cut off when he found out that General Motors stopped making the Oldsmobile, and he believes the company started going downhill when bean counters who never held a screwdriver took it over.
