Towamencin Farm Market Opens

veggiesA new farmers’ market opened Saturday on the grounds of the Morgan Log House in Towamencin Township. Log House Executive Director Sarah DiSantis says she hopes it will raise the visibility of the historic site.

“We’re trying to utilize the large amount of property we have here for the community, and the Farmers’ Market and Craft Fair is a free program open to the public, and it’s a way to draw people who may not have been here before who may not be interested in coming to a colonial log house but are more interested in what the market and craft fair itself has.”

DiSantis says they hope a few market shoppers will also make a small donation or buy something in the gift shop to help support other activities at the historic site.  Vendors included the Skippack Creek Farm of Harleysville.  Owner Joe McGonigle says his fruits and vegetables are all natural, grown with no chemicals, and he protects his produce from harmful pests in several ways.

“For example if we have a bug problem I actually bring in or attract good bugs to eat those bad bugs so we don’t have to use harmful pesticides.  Also I use cover crops and manure in the winter on the fields for nitrogen and I use trickle irrigation, which actually goes underneath the ground and saves water.  I only use about 40 percent of the water I would if I were using overhead irrigation.”

McGonigle says his fruits and vegetables are grown in the same way as organic fruits and vegetables, but he’s not allowed to use the word “organic” because the government owns the word and charges money for a license to use it, and he would have to pass the cost on to the customers.  The Morgan Log House Farmers’ Market and Craft Fair is open twice a month through September, and the next date is Saturday, July 24.
