Montgomery County’s Fifth Fire District, which is made up largely of volunteer fire companies in the North Penn and Indian Valley areas, holds its Eighth Annual Water Battle and Firefighters Showdown Saturday in Hatfield Township. Fifth District President Al Novack says the event has some fun and games, but most things spectators see are real training exercises.
“We have several competitive games which test the abilities of firefighters in communication skills and teamwork. That’s all important on the fire ground. This may not look serious when you have a tug of war, this may not look serious when you have midnight ride, but it tests everything that they learned in fire school.”
Novack says the team that does the best job of working together is the team that wins. The Water Battle and Firefighters Showdown opens to the public at 10:00 am and continues for most of the day, probably until around 3:00 or 4:00 pm, at School Road Park in Hatfield Township. It’s free and open to the public. In the event of rain it will be canceled and re-scheduled for a later date.
