Towamencin Farm Market

veggiesA new farmers’ market was open for its second time Saturday on the grounds of the Morgan Log House in Towamencin Township. Vendors included Yussef Hyman of Philadelphia, who was selling pens, pencils and other personal accessories that he turns on a lathe at home.  Customer Dale New of Harleysville was looking for a fountain pen.  He says it makes a nicer signature than a ball point or rollerball pen.

“A good fountain pen glides on the paper the way a really nice rollerball does.  It just kind of flows on the paper.  It’s very nice to write with.”

Hyman says he makes them from acrylic and old, discarded wood.

“I take old furniture that’s no good and cut it up from craigslist, Curb Alerts, and people giving away stuff that they don’t want anymore.  You can take it and re-use it.”

Hyman says he does not go to yard sales and garage sales because the wood he wants is too expensive there.  Jaye Fissel of Lansdale, owner of The Barkery, was there with dog treats she makes at her home, and she started the business because she saw a need.

“Looking at the snacks that are out in the stores, looking at the prices and the ingredients, and having a Collie of my own and not wanting to give him a lot of the ingredients that are in it, I started making stuff at home for him and a lot of family members, and then we went a little bit further and said, ‘This is obviously a good idea because everybody likes it, so we need to go public with it.’”
