Tour The Perkiomen Trail By Phone

perkPerkiomen Trail users can now learn more about its history and the local environment by simply picking up their cell phones. Montgomery County Parks and Heritage Department Trails Manager Rich Wood says new brochures with a trail map and phone numbers are now available at kiosks along the upper half of the trail, from Route 113 in Rahns to Green Lane Park.  He says the trails are about more than recreation, health and wellness.

“We want to give them some information about what we’ve developed and the history of it because it’s so rich with history and culture, and even the environmental issues that we have in this area, so while you’re walking, or stop on your bicycle if you have to, and take a look at the Green Lane Reservoir.  Take a look at the old mill house in Central Perkiomen Valley Park, and what you’re walking on and riding on, and learn what they were 50 or 100 years ago.”

Wood says it’s a pilot program that they plan to expand to the entire Perkiomen Trail, as well as the Schuylkill River Trail and the Cross-County Trail, and the first year is funded at no cost to county taxpayers, thanks to a grant from the Rails to Trails Conservancy.
