Lansdale Bike Night

motorcyclesMotorcycles and spectators jammed West Main Street in Lansdale Saturday night for the annual Bike Night. Robert Chebook of North Wales was there with the first and only street-legal motorized bicycle in Pennsylvania.  He says he took an old bike he bought at sears and modified it.

“I had this bike sitting down in the basement, and I saw that all these guys were putting motors on bicycles, and I decided to take the challenge on actually getting street-legal.  It’s becoming quite a big fad all across the United States and nobody’s getting them legalized.  They just ride looking over their shoulders.”

Chebook says he worked with his inspection shop and found out what his motorized bicycle needed to become street-legal, and after about eight months of trading paperwork back and forth with Harrisburg he got it approved.  Other exhibitors included Peter Nimmerichter of Stowe, who was there with his motorcycle hearse with the words “One More Ride” written on it.  He says he had heard of them before, so he did some research and found that there were none in Southeastern Pennsylvania, and that’s when he started working on it.

“I tried to purchase one online but it was too expensive, and it didn’t look the way I wanted it to, so I sat down at the drawing board last October and I drew up a print, got the conception and took a square box, tried to make it look round and built a motorcycle hearse.  The passion came out of it because of riding motorcycles and because of all the people in the military who need to be honored when they pass on, and I couldn’t think of a better way to do it.”

Nimmerichter says Bike Night was the first time he’s had his motorcycle hearse out in public, and he’s still waiting for his first funeral.  He says he’ll give veterans their last ride at his cost.
