The Peter Becker Community held a Senior Expo and Health Fair Thursday. The Expo was at the Maplewood Estates, off School Road in Franconia Township. Ron Moyer, who served as administrator for the first 25 years, says Peter Becker is more than a retirement community. It’s a charitable ministry.
“There are many people living here that don’t have any funds at all. Last year, for instance, Peter Becker Community as a corporation spent over a million dollars just to make up for the bills that people couldn’t pay that live here, so that’s a lot of charity work for one year, and this has been typical year after year because the people who live here who have exhausted their funds have never been asked to leave. Nobody has ever been asked to leave or move.”
Moyer says he and his wife Diane moved in as residents about ten years after he retired, and now they do a lot of volunteer work for the Community. He says Peter Becker was the first elder for the Church of the Brethren to come to the United States from Germany in 1719, and he is buried on the grounds of the Peter Becker Community, which is open to people from all denominations.
