Knapp Farm Historic Marker Dedicated

american-flagThe Montgomery Township Historical Society unveiled a new historic road marker and held an open house Sunday at the Knapp Farm, Route 202 and Knapp Road. Society President Richard Roller says members of the Knapp family lived there for 167 years, including Florence, who was the oldest person in the world when she died in 1988.  He says she lived there for most of her 114 years, and was a big part of the township’s history.

“Our township is going to be celebrating its 300th anniversary in 2014, and Florence was here for fully a third of that time, so it’s incredible when you think about time and her place in that time.”

He lives across the street from the Knapp Farm, and remembers visiting Florence and her sister Henrietta.

“Once I walked through the door the girls were there inviting me in to have a cup of tea, sit down, and they would regale me with stories of the township and their lives, and it was wonderful.”

The Knapp family donated the farmhouse and seven acres of land to the historical society.  Roller says they have to fix up the house a little bit more, and then they hope to furnish it and give visitors a taste of what life was like when the house was built in 1760.  Scheduled tours could start within a year or two.
