Saldutti: Stony Creek #1

Stoney_CreekLansdale Parks and Recreation Director Carl Saldutti says Stony Creek on Hancock Street (pictured here) has become the borough’s most popular park. He says it has something for everyone.

“There’s active area, there’s passive area, you can sit down and reflect on things.  We put the pond in, which I think has a nice calming effect in the park as well, and a nature trail for those who want to exercise and take in nature, so we’re pleased with the level of activity.  There’s been very little vandalism, which I think also speaks to the kind of usage we have.  Good constructive use deters the other stuff that you might find taking place when parks are not being utilized by the community.”

He says the numbers deter vandalism as users take ownership and look out for the park.

“It goes along with a sense of community, having a sense that you belong in the community, some pride in what the community offers and some of the assets, their assets actually because the community owns our park system and its assets, so it’s nice to see that type of ownership.”

He says one of its best features is a one-of-a-kind playground built to fit in with the natural environment.

“We did want to incorporate the landscape into some of the play apparatus and give it that sense of being one with the environment, and I think that’s been accomplished as well.”

Once people get into the park, Saldutti says they forget about the heavy traffic on Hancock Street, and South Broad Street a short distance away, and the park’s natural tranquility takes over.
