Mardi Gras Parade Kicks Off Holiday Season

SantaThe North Penn Marching Knights were among the many units participating in Lansdale’s Mardi Gras Parade on Saturday. Director Mike Britcher says the band did very well in competition this year.

“The beginning of October we won our class at the Yamaha Cup in the new Meadowlands stadium, so it was a huge win for us at that show.  Following that we went to the Northern States Championship in Allentown.  We placed second overall there, so it was great, and we finished our competitive season at our national championship show in Annapolis, Maryland and we placed third there.  It was a great year for them.”

He says the kids put a lot of hard work into their music and marching.

“They’re an incredibly dedicated group of young people.  They have tremendous reserves of energy and clearly a lot of great support at home.”

Britcher says the Marching Knights performed for eleven Saturdays in a row counting the Mardi Gras Parade, so it was a long haul, and the band staff and North Penn High School administration have been very supportive throughout the season.  Other parade attractions included a rock ‘n’ roll float from Cub Scout Pack Nine at Trinity Lutheran Church.  Cubmaster Eric Claxon says they were keeping with the parade’s theme.

“60 Rockin’ Years of the Mardi Gras.  We are the Pack Nine Twisted Christmas float.  Ha, ha.  We’re playing traditional Christmas music played by Twisted Sister, ha, ha, hence all the rock ‘n’ roll outfits – long Afro wig, black leather jackets – rock ‘n’ roll clothes.  A bunch of us are old rock ‘n’ rollers from back in the 80’s.  Our kids are in Pack Nine now, and we just want to have fun with them like we had, so it was a great theme so we ran with it.”

He says the parade is a great Lansdale tradition.

“The community, the family, everyone coming out and having a good time and seeing all of the kids enjoying themselves as well.”

Claxon says he still plays the bass, and every now and then he plays it in a band.
