Peter Becker Senior Expo Draws Good Crowd

SR_ExpoThe Peter Becker Community held its Fourth Annual Senior Expo Thursday, September 22, at Maplewood Estates, on Maplewood Drive near School House Road in Franconia Township. Exhibitors included Financial Advisor Greg McGovern of Edward Jones in Souderton.  He said retirees should have their investments evaluated and think about consolidating them.

“Instead of getting five or six statements each month they can consolidate to one and have a plan to have their money work for them for additional income.”

He said retirees need to review their investments and do a couple of other things.

“Work with somebody.  Don’t just put everything in cash, because the interest rate on cash is zero at this point.  I think long term it’s to make sure they’re working with their family to make sure they have a will, or estate planning or a trust set up, so that in case anything should ever happen to them their money doesn’t go back to taxes.”

Despite the ups and downs in the market, McGovern said stocks can still be good investments.

David Gehman of Gehman’s Clock Repair, just off Route 113 in Franconia, was also there.  He said he fixes key-wind and weight-driven mechanical clocks.

“Antique clocks, mantle clocks, chime clocks, grandfather clocks.  A lot of them are old clocks that are made a lot better than they are today.”

He said he likes the look and sound of the old clocks.

“When I repair clocks I have a lot of them hanging around, running to make sure that they keep time and keep chiming and striking. I like to hear all the different-sounding chimes.  They’re very musical.  Even the ticking sounds musical.”

Gehman said his grandfather and great grandfather repaired clocks, but he never knew them, and he learned the trade on his own with help from an older man.
