Merry Tuba Christmas

Lansdale_TreeAbout 65 tubas, baritone horns and euphoniums entertained a holiday crowd of 300 to 400 Sunday afternoon at Lansdale’s Twelfth Annual Merry Tuba Christmas Concert, held at Railroad Plaza. Conductor Steve Frederick says the weather was just right.

“Tuba Christmas was meant to be outside, and this is a picture perfect day.  The crowd was great, the players enjoyed themselves, and we’re thankful for it.  People are smiling and talking to each other.  This is a pretty unique community and we can just be so proud of it.”

Musicians included Perkiomen Valley High School tenth grader Ben Basalik, who says he took up the tuba in sixth grade because he wanted to play the deepest-voiced instrument in the band.

“They’re large and they have a lot of range that I enjoy very much.”

He won a trophy for best-decorated tuba after dressing it in a sweater and scarf.  He says he also won in 2009 when he put a tree in the bell of his horn.  He says he wishes he got twenty dollars like he did two years ago, but he’s happy with his second trophy.
