Green Fair Showcases Eco-Friendly Living

The Peter Becker Community held its Third Annual Green Fair for Eco-Friendly Living Thursday at Maplewood Estates in Harleysville.

Volunteer Coordinator Cindy Hollis was there drumming up support for the Green Team.  She says it’s made up of residents and staff working to establish green policies.

“Our first focus is on our residents to educate them on the importance of being green and how we can become greener.”

Exhibitors included Sales Manager Molly Johnston-Heck of Common Market Philadelphia, a food distributor with a difference.  She says the company buys from local farmers and keeps their identity on the products.

“On every box of produce it says the name of the farm so that we’re not just going to the wholesale market and buying it from anybody and selling it to anybody.  We’re really paying the farmers a decent wage and also keeping their identity so that they can be proud of what they have grown.”

Johnston-Heck says there are environmental and health reasons for buying locally-grown food, and it’s also good for the local economy.
