Holidays At The Homestead

Jenkins_HomesteadThe Lansdale Historical Society celebrated Holidays at the Homestead Saturday at the Jenkins Homestead (pictured here).

Actress Pat Jordan from the American Historical Theatre Group was on hand portraying Sarah Jenkins, who founded the Jenkins Farm in 1746 along with her husband John.

She said people living on Colonial farms worked very hard, starting early in the morning when they had to bring in water.

“For cooking, cleaning and all of the other things you needed water for, and that’s not easy.  Our spring, which is underground, is the headwater of the Towamencin Creek.  We call this Spring Farm, by the way.”

She said church was also a very important part of their lives.

“We’re Baptists from the Montgomery Baptist Church up the road apiece, and we own most of the property up to the church.  We not only worship there but we learn all the gossip and the news and the boys and the girls court a little bit, and it’s kind of charming to see that.  It reminds you of the old days when you were the one being courted.”

Jenkins said Colonial era Baptists did not celebrate Christmas.  They observed it as a solemn religious holiday, and their decorations were very modest compared to what other people may have had.
