Towamencin officials are recognizing four township police officers for preventing a suicide last month.
It happened on the Fourth of July at the Main Street Apartment complex near the Acme on West Main Street. Officers James Hanrahan, Steven Miller, Gregory Wert and John Wittenberger were investigating a report of a man about to kill himself. They found him holding a large knife in an apartment with the door ajar. Officer Miller got close enough to use his baton and struck the man in the arm causing him to drop the knife. That made it possible for the suicidal subject to be taken into protective custody. Towamencin officials have presented Miller with a commendation for heroism. He also received a distinguished unit citation along with Officers Hanrahan, Wert and Wittenberger.
