SEPTA Fares Going Up

dollarThe SEPTA board has approved a budget that raises most fares when the new fiscal year starts on July 1. They go up by about six percent on buses, subways and trolleys and eight percent on the regional rails.  A spokesman for the transit agency, Andrew Busch, says midday off-peak fares are being eliminated on the trains, partly as an incentive for more riders to use passes.

“For the vast majority of the people who are using the system daily, or even several times a week, the passes offer a great value.  It’s kind of a little bit of an incentive if maybe somebody hadn’t thought about it before will move to a pass, and as we get closer to hopefully getting new payment technology, we’d like wherever possible to get people a little more used to using passes.”

Busch says they are also trying to simplify the fare collection system, and off-peak discounts on the regional rail system will continue evenings and weekends.
