Lansdale Residents See Vine-Wood Project

road_constructionBorough officials are showing residents plans for the Vine-Wood Street Improvement Project. Traffic Engineer Earl Armitage says the main change will be a slight relocation of Susquehanna and Derstine Avenues to provide a diagonal connection between Vine  and Wood Streets, and they also plan sidewalk upgrades.

“We’re going to look at areas where we can potentially widen the sidewalk, and a lot of the sidewalk is old and doesn’t meet the ADA standards, so we’re going to be looking to fully replace those areas.  We’re also looking to put a brick paver band in between the curb and the sidewalks so that it matches the improvements that are being done on Main and Broad Street.”

He says they will also install new street lights, benches, bike racks, and signs directing people to the library, post office and other points of interest.  Borough Councilwoman Mary Fuller says the plans call for combining two parking lots on opposite sides of the Vine Street alley, adding a few more spaces and eliminating cut-throughs the neighbors have complained about.

“People won’t be cutting through the alley there behind Columbia Avenue because they won’t need to any more.  There’ll be the softer curves, no 90-degree turns, and traffic from Main and Broad can filter through Vine and Wood.  We’re not diverting traffic, but just making it a more enhanced community.”

Fuller says council listened to residents in revising the original plans.  Another informal meeting on the Vine-Wood Street Improvement Project is coming up Saturday morning, from 9:00 to 11:00, at Borough Hall.
