Heat Sets Record Again

beachThe temperature reached another record high Wednesday afternoon, hitting 103 degrees in Philadelphia. The old record of 98 was set in 1994. Tuesday's high of 102 was also a record. The heat is straining the water supply in some areas, and they are restricting use, but North Penn Water Authority Executive Director Tony Bellitto says their supply is good, and people can continue watering gardens and shrubs, but there is no need to water the lawn.

“It does brown out, and maybe it doesn’t look too good, but grass is very resilient and as the rain comes, and it will return, the grass will rebound without the need for any extra watering.  We just ask people to use that outdoor water wisely.  It doesn’t make sense to water your flowers and shrubs in the middle of the day because most of that just evaporates, and it doesn’t go to the benefit of the plants, so use that water earlier in the morning or in the evening, and that should be fine.”

Bellitto says he does not envision any restrictions.  The Bucks County Water and Sewer Authority, on the other hand, is requesting voluntary restrictions on washing cars, filling pools and watering lawns and gardens.  The heat is also straining the power supply, and PPL’s Michael Wood says you can conserve by setting the air conditioning thermostat a little higher.

“Push it up to 75, 76 degrees, or even higher than that if you can still be comfortable.  Each degree makes a big difference.  We see the demand on our system rise for every degree it warms up throughout the afternoon.”

Wood says you can also save by replacing the filter, which the local home improvement store sells for a couple of dollars, and keeping the curtains, blinds or shades closed when the sun is shining.  Relief from the heat is coming, with highs in the 80’s Friday, Saturday and Sunday, and rain is likely Friday night and Saturday.
