Bucks Co DA: Pigeon Shoot Not Criminal

pigeonBucks County District Attorney David Heckler says he will not let a lawyer represent an animal rights activist who has filed a private criminal complaint aimed at stopping the Philadelphia Gun Club from having pigeon shoots. The club, on the Delaware River banks in Bensalem, has been holding pigeon shoots for more than a century.  Humane Society officer Johnna Seeton is set to argue her case next month before a district judge.  Heckler says shooting pigeons is not a crime in Pennsylvania, and he will not let her turn it into a crime.  He says he had a candid conversation with her, and he will give her another week to present legal arguments in writing before making a final decision.  The law allows her to file a private criminal complaint, but it requires the DA to approve legal representation.  Heckler says he would prosecute the club himself if he thought it was committing a crime.
