Montco Takes Steps Toward Relocating Sewer Plant

BathroomThe Montgomery County Commissioners have approved spending $3.7 million to buy about ten acres of land near the Norristown Sewage Treatment Plant, demolish three old buildings on the site, and remediate environmental problems. A state grant will reimburse the county after it spends the money.  It’s part of a larger project to relocate the plant to another site about a half-mile away, and County Policy Director Steve Nelson says the project is huge.

“It is about a $130 million project if my memory serves me, which is the estimated cost to buy the land, to remediate the land, to demolish the buildings, to design a sewer plant, to build a sewer plant, so it is no small task.  The Sewer Authority has concerns that once they start heading down this road toward relocation that the sewer authority will be on the hook for that large chunk of money needed.”

Nelson says the commissioners and the Montgomery County Redevelopment Authority are doing all they can to convince Norristown officials that the sewage plant relocation project is an essential part of revitalization, and they can find the money if they have the political will to get the job done.
