One Life, One Chance Awareness Walk Coming Next Month

sunThe public is invited to a walk and forum next month in Fort Washington to raise awareness about prescription drug abuse. The sponsor is a group called One Life, One Chance.  Sal Rocco of Ambler, whose son Stephen died of a prescription drug overdose in early 2008 at the age of 21, says his best memories are of his son’s personality and smile.

“I don’t recall one picture where he was not having that beautiful smile, and he loved life, he loved football and he loved family.  Family was his all-in-all.  At our family celebrations right now there’s always that one plate where we’re missing Stephen there.”

Rocco says Stephen made a bad connection while serving a short prison term for fighting, and he died a month after his release, but he would love knowing that his parents are spreading the word about the dangers of drug abuse.  His mother, Kathy Rocco, says she and Sal decided to go public to help other families facing similar problems.

“Hopefully now they will see that these drugs are dangerous and maybe with this walk, hopefully, one child, just one person, would see the seriousness and save the pain of what Sal and I and our family went through.”

Rocco says she still sees her son and his smile every day.  She and Sal appeared Thursday on the WNPV talk program Comment Please by Univest.  The Awareness Walk In Memory of Stephen Rocco takes place on Sunday, September 19, between noon and 4:00pm, at Mondauk Common Park, Dillon and Susquehanna Roads in Fort Washington.
