Stink Bug Invasion Coming Soon

stink_bugStink Bugs are back, probably in record numbers, and Montgomery County Cooperative Extension Service Horticulturist Rebecca Boylan says they will head indoors very soon. She says Brown Marmorated Stink Bugs, imported from Asia and pictured here, have been feeding and fattening up all summer, and they want warm places to hibernate when the weather turns cooler.

“On a sunny day they’re going to congregate on the sunniest part of your house, and every time you open the door they’re going to come in, or they find cracks or crevices around your windows or attic openings and they come in, and they’re a nuisance pest.  They don’t bite, they don’t sting, they don’t carry any diseases but they’re a pain and, just like the name says, if you crush them they stink.”

Boylan says they do not recommend spraying indoors for Stink Bugs because they are only a nuisance.  She says check weather stripping around doors and windows and repair or replace it if needed, and get rid of leaf litter outdoors where they hide.  She also says they feed on fruit trees and other plants and cause some damage.  Fortunately for home gardeners, she says, they are large and easy to see and the best way to get rid of them is to pick them off of plants by hand.
