Bryn Athyn College Student Has Measles

medical-symbolThe Montgomery County Health Department says a Bryn Athyn College student has been diagnosed with measles. The 25-year-old man traveled recently to Zambia, Africa, which has a large ongoing measles outbreak.  He is hospitalized in isolation, and will be released when all restrictions have been lifted.  Health department investigators and college staff have contacted people who might have been exposed through close contact with the student.  The disease starts with a runny nose, watery eyes, a cough and high fever.  After two or three days tiny white spots appear in the mouth, and then a raised red rash starts on the face and spreads down the body and out to the arms and legs.  Symptoms last from one to two weeks.  Infants under the age of one, people who have had no vaccination or only one vaccination and immune-compromised people are the most vulnerable.  People born before 1957 are considered immune.
