Remove Snow And Ice Or Pay

cold_weatherPennsylvania law requires all snow and ice to be cleared off the top surfaces of cars and trucks, and PennDot’s Gene Blaum says the law provides penalties. “When snow or ice is dislodged or falls from a moving vehicle and strikes another vehicle or pedestrian causing death or serious bodily injury, the operator of the vehicle from which the snow is dislodged or falls shall be subject to a fine of not less than $200 nor more than $1,000 for each offense, and there is also a citation if any part of your windshield or side or rear windows are obstructed.”

If you get behind someone with snow piled high on the roof, he says drop back and increase your following distance.

“You just don’t want to get too close to those vehicles that have that kind of snow on the top.  It’s downright dangerous.”

Blaum says it probably takes no more than an extra ten minutes to get the snow completely off the vehicle, and it results in a safer trip.  He appeared Thursday on the WNPV talk program Comment Please by Univest.
