Workers at the JBS Souderton Beef Processing and Rendering Plant in Franconia have ratified their first union contract. They joined the United Food and Commercial Workers Union Local 1776, based in Plymouth Meeting, last October. It represents about 1,200 workers at the plant, known as Smithfield’s Mopac Unit until the Brazilian Company JBS bought Smithfield more than two years ago. Local 1776 President Wendell Young says the three-year deal gives the workers better wages, healthcare benefits and working conditions.
