The Salvation Army Commanding Officer in Norristown, Major Laurence Wittenburg, says their shelter for homeless families is usually at its capacity of seven, with more on a waiting list. But when the Montgomery County Health Department declares a Code Blue cold weather alert they find room for more.
“We’ll take families in without the usual referrals and without the usual paperwork because we have to get them off the street, and what we do there with the Code Blue is we have mats that we put in the dining room and the lobby and we fill our places up that way. We bring them in and house them the best we can.”
Major Wittenburg says that has been the rule rather than the exception this winter because the weather has been so cold they have had only a few days without a Code Blue. He appeared Wednesday on the WNPV talk program Legally Speaking.
