Sustainable Waste Has “Green” Trash Service

recycle-symbolA Souderton company is in the “green” trash-hauling business. Sustainable Waste Co-Founder and Chief Operating Officer Scott Woodrow says they re-use or recycle what they can and convert the rest into energy by using it as fuel.

“When you burn fuel oil you get heat, when we burn waste we get heat.  The waste basically contains about 5,000 BTU’s per pound, and we use that as fuel in lieu of coal, oil or natural gas.”

He says it’s no more expensive than dumping trash in landfills, and in the long run it costs less.

“When you look at the whole program collectively with recycling we can actually reduce cost, and by not sending waste to landfills we’re reducing greenhouse gases.”

He says they compete head-to-head every day with conventional trash haulers on both price and service, but they started out with a different focus.

“We were initially founded as a company that provided secure destruction for other companies that had materials that they needed to make sure that they were destroyed, and about two years ago we began to discover that there was a demand in the marketplace for companies that just wanted to be green.  They just wanted to be out of the landfill and say, ‘I’m a landfill-free company.’”

Woodrow says their customers include Merck, Teva and Johnson and Johnson, as well as a few smaller companies.  They are all commercial now, but he says they hope to expand into the residential market.  He appeared Thursday on the monthly Transportation Edition of the WNPV talk program Comment Please by Univest.
