Turnpike Widening Enters New Phase

Turnpike-LogoA project to re-build and widen the Northeast Extension of the Pennsylvania turnpike is moving into a new phase. Work started Monday February 28, on about six miles of roadway in Plymouth, Whitpain and Worcester Townships, from the Mid-County Interchange to a point just south of Berks Road.  Plans call for widening the existing highway from four lanes to six, and the Turnpike Commission’s Mimi Doyle says that’s not the beginning or the end of the project.

“We’re going to be widening the median for safety purposes, the shoulders will be widened, we are now on our fifth bridge in the 10.5-mile construction area, which is Morris Road, and that allows us to expand the roadway to six lanes.”

Doyle says  the project should be finished in late 2013 at a cost of about $151 million, and after that work will start on the final section between Berks Road and the Lansdale Interchange.  She says traffic backups should disappear when that section is finished in late 2016.  It’s still being designed, so the cost is unknown, but toll revenues are funding the entire project, with no state or federal tax dollars.
