“Project Safe Playground” has abandoned its fundraising campaign aimed at upgrading a playground at Chestnut Street and Wile Avenue in Souderton. The group was planning the project in memory of Skyler Kauffman, the nine-year-old girl who was murdered earlier this year. Harleysville resident Stephanie Haas, who started the effort, says the group is unable to keep going at this time, and all donations will be returned. 24-year-old James Lee Troutman allegedly raped and beat her to death in early May at the Souderton Gardens Apartments, where they both lived. The project was apparently abandoned because of a family feud between Skyler’s mother, Heather Gebhard, and her paternal grandmother, Carol Kauffman.
