Unrepresented People Tying Up Courts

Lansdale lawyer Amy Stern says a little-known result of the poor economy is a big increase in the number of people going to court without legal representation. She says most of them are in over their heads.

“They don’t have the know-how, they don’t have the experience, they didn’t go to law school, they don’t know how procedurally to handle these cases, they don’t know how to deal with the insurance companies, with the other attorneys, with the judges, and it’s a big problem.  It’s tying up the court system and people are not getting their cases resolved.”

Stern, who concentrates on family law, says communication between spouses is the key to saving money on legal fees in divorce and custody cases.

“If the parents are able to communicate with each other they’re going to get themselves a lot farther than if they’re fighting about every single issue and they have to go through attorneys.  If you can have these discussions with your spouse and work these things out on your own, you’re going to save yourself a lot of money.

Stern says the more they bicker and fight the more they spend on legal fees.  She appeared September 28 on the WNPV talk program Legally Speaking.
