Train Fatalities Bring Safety Warning

septa_trainFor the second time in three days, a young man has been struck and killed by a train on SEPTA’s Warminster line while walking on the tracks in the Hatboro area. The latest death happened shortly before 7:00am Wednesday near Meadowbrook Avenue in the borough.  On Monday another man was killed near the Pennsylvania Turnpike overpass in Upper Moreland Township, just outside of Hatboro.  SEPTA’s Richard Maloney says people who walk on the tracks may think it’s safe, but it’s not.

“It’s easy to think you don’t see a train coming and haven’t seen one there for weeks, and that’s just when the tragedy occurs.  There have been many cases across the country of people, mostly teenagers, wearing headphones or ear buds with some musical device walking on tracks and not hearing a train approach.”

Maloney says the man killed on Monday, identified by the Montgomery County Coroner’s office as 24-year-old Scott Stevens of Warminster, was wearing ear buds at the time and walking with his back to the train.  He says walking on the gravel off to the side of the tracks is also dangerous, and that’s where one of two people killed last June in Lansdale was walking.
