Connector Road Finished

End_Road_WorkThanks largely to a mild winter and dry weather for much of the spring, the first half of a long-awaited Montgomery County highway project is open to traffic ahead of schedule. It’s The Route 309-Sumneytown Pike Connector, which PennDot’s Gene Blaum says is being built in two sections.

“The western end goes from Allentown Road to Route 63, and the eastern end will go from Allentown Road to Route 309.  The western end is done, and it’s done early, and now they’re just doing a little bit of work on Mainland Road, which is the old Route 63, between Old Forty Foot Road and Freed Road.”

Blaum says the western section, along Wambold Road in Towamencin and Lower Salford Townships, has been open for a while, and Mainland Road is no longer a state highway.  It’s a local road.  The relocated section of Sumneytown Pike goes around the north side of the Village of Mainland.  The entire project cost about $23 million.  He says the eastern section of the Route 309-Sumneytown Pike Connector is in design, but funding has not been found and construction is probably eight or nine years away.
