Sandy Recovery Underway

Hurricane Sandy has left behind a lot of damage, and clean-up and fix-up work is underway.

It swept through Southeastern Pennsylvania doing most of its damage Monday afternoon and early Tuesday, and Peco Energy’s Liz Williamson says it set a record for the most storm-related power outages in company history.

“That record was formerly held by the January, 1994 ice storm when we saw outages of 520,000 customers.”

She says Sandy knocked out more than 800,000, or about half of their customers.  Peco’s hardest-hit places in Montgomery County include Horsham, Upper Moreland and Montgomery Townships.  

In PPL’s coverage area, the hardest hit places in Montgomery County include Upper Hanover and Franconia Townships and Hatfield Township and Borough.  All of Hatfield Borough lost power on Monday night, and it was still out on Wednesday morning.

In Bucks County the hardest hit places include Richland, Milford, East Rockhill and Hilltown Townships.  That company’s Joe Nixon says some of the most important work customers can do is in the planning before a storm hits.

“Anticipate what you’re going to need and also re-locate if possible.  It may be better to go with a friend or relative who does have power until we can get things restored.”

While both companies are still assessing the damage, they say full restoration could take a week.

The Chairman of the Bucks County Commissioners, Rob Loughery, spent much of the day Tuesday traveling around the county surveying storm damage.  He says he saw a lot of limbs and entire trees that fell down, but one thing took him a little bit by surprise.

“What we didn’t see was a lot of the flooding that we thought could happen.  The Delaware river and the creeks are up, but not near where they’ve been in other tropical storms or hurricanes that we’ve had.”

Loughery says his own home in Bedminster lost power, so he understands how more than 200,000 other customers in the county felt when they lost theirs.
