A Bad Flu Season

medical-symbolThe flu is widespread this winter in Pennsylvania, and Montgomery County has had more than 800 confirmed cases compared to a little more than 100 last winter.

County Health Department Communicable Disease Specialist Michael Baysinger says the season probably won’t peak for a couple of weeks, vaccine will be available while the supply lasts, and so far it’s holding up pretty well.

“We still have about 800 to 900 doses of influenza vaccine.  There might be some spotty shortages from healthcare practices that have used their vaccine up and they’re having a hard time getting it delivered to them, but from my understanding there’s still vaccine available.”

The Chief Executive Officer at Grand View Hospital in Sellersville, Jean Keeler, says it’s keeping her staff busy.

“The beds are pretty full, the ER is pretty full, and we’re doing our very best to keep a few beds open to get the sickest of the sick into the beds.”

Public health clinics have flu shots in Montgomery and Bucks Counties.  They are also available from the North Penn Visiting Nurse Association, most private physicians and most larger drug stores.
