Man Goes On Trial In 44-Year-Old Murder Case

wnpv_police_beatA career criminal who was charged with murder about three years ago in the 1966 shooting death of a Philadelphia police officer is going on trial. Walter Barclay died of a gunshot wound at a Bucks County nursing home in the summer of 2007, 41 years after he was shot while trying to stop a burglary at a beauty shop in the East Oak Lane section of the city.  He was 64 when he died.  Bucks County Coroner Joseph Campbell ruled that Barclay’s death was a homicide because the gunshot wound resulted in paralysis, which led to a urinary tract infection that eventually killed him.  The defense will probably argue that no link between the infection and the shooting can be proven.  Barclay had lived in Bensalem, in Bucks County, for several years prior to his death at the Buckingham Valley Rehabilitation and Nursing Center.  The Shooter, William Barnes, is now 74 years old and serving time at Graterford State Prison for a parole violation.  He spent several years in prison for attempted murder in officer Barclay’s shooting.
