Man Acquitted In 41-Year-Old Shooting

wnpv_police_beatA career criminal who was charged with murder about three years ago in the 1966 shooting death of a Philadelphia police officer has been found not guilty. Walter Barclay died at a Bucks County nursing home in 2007, 41 years after he was shot while trying to stop a burglary in the city.  Barclay’s death was ruled a homicide because a medical examiner found that the gunshot wound led to an infection that eventually killed him.  The defense questioned how a key prosecution witness could link the infection directly to the shooting after so many years.  The confessed shooter, William Barnes, is now 74 years old and serving time at Graterford State Prison for a parole violation.  He spent several years in prison for attempted murder in Officer Barclay’s shooting, and it is unlikely that he will be released any time soon.
