Repeat DUI Offender Wants Sentence Reduced

DDAn Upper Gwynedd man, convicted of drunken driving for the sixth time in ten years, is asking the courts to reduce his sentence. A judge gave 58-year-old Raymond Leight III of Garfield Avenue 2 ½ to 5 years in state prison after a jury found him guilty of DUI earlier this year.  That’s the maximum allowed under the law, and his lawyer says it’s excessive.  Defense Attorney Wentworth Vedder argues in court documents that his client is being punished for having a disease, like yellow fever or smallpox, and Leight did not cause any injury or property damage during his latest DUI incident.  He was arrested in March of last year in the parking lot of a Wawa store on Valley Forge Road with a strong odor of alcohol on his breath, slurred speech and bloodshot eyes.  At his sentencing two weeks ago, Montgomery County Judge Thomas Rogers called him “an absolute danger to society.”
