A Philadelphia man has been convicted of killing a Norristown man late last year during an alleged drug deal. A Montgomery County jury found 22-year-old Ryan Starling (pictured here) guilty of third degree murder and other offenses in the death of 26-year-old Lawrence Stevenson, who was gunned down three days before Christmas outside the Curren Terrace Apartments on New Hope Street in Norristown. Defense attorney John McMahon said Starling admitted shooting Stevenson, but he did it in self-defense after two men threatened to kidnap him and hold him for ransom. He said they targeted him because he bragged about money his mother got from a medical malpractice lawsuit settlement. Assistant District Attorney Wallis Brooks said Starling came up from Philadelphia to rob Stevenson, and he shot the unarmed man twice in the back while he was running away.
