Mom Who Stabbed Son Gets Prison Time

montco_courthouseA Telford woman who admitted stabbing and wounding her 12-year-old son has been given five to 15 years in state prison. 34-year-old Labarbara Cheek pleaded guilty but mentally ill to a felony charge of aggravated assault earlier this year in Montgomery County Court.  She said she could not understand the wrongfulness of what she did because of her mental illness, and she will serve her time getting treatment in a mental health unit.  Court documents say the boy was sitting in the living room watching TV last September when she tried to stab him in the chest and abdomen with a ten-inch kitchen knife.  He jumped out of the way, but she stabbed him twice in the back.  After the stabbing, the boy ran out to a neighbor’s home and called 911 while his mother barricaded herself in their home at the Telford Garden Apartments on Fourth Street.  Police took her into custody a short time later.  When they entered the apartment, she was completely naked.  The boy has recovered from his wounds and is living with his father in Maryland.
